What is Reiki?

The word Reiki comes from the Japanese word (rei) which means “universal life” and (ki) which means “energy.” In practice, reiki is a holistic Japanese healing touch technique for stress reduction and relaxation. Reiki was discovered in Japan by Mikao Usui in the early 1900s. Although source energy is ancient and has been used in a number of healing and shamanic practices, reiki energy is advanced, and promotes the bodies innate healing abilities on physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual levels.

When our energetic and physical vibrations are lowered (often due to stress/anxiety/fear/shame), our bodies are triggered and tend to enter a “fight or flight” mode. Studies show that when we are in this stress-filled state, our immune systems are stagnant and suppressed. A Reiki session can help alleviate these blockages and help support the body to facilitate an environment for healing on all levels. It also works beautifully in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote recovery.

Not sure what to expect? Let’s break it down! After a brief intention-setting discussion, clients lay fully clothed on a massage table with the option to use an eye covering to promote a deeper sense of relaxation. Soft music plays as we begin a brief guided meditation and simple breath work exercises to calm the nervous system. From there, a pendulum is hovered above the body to detect any stagnancy in your chakras; the spinning disks of energy that should stay “open” and aligned, as they correspond to bundles of nerves, major organs, and areas of our energetic body that affect our emotional and physical well-being. As the session begins, hands will either hover above or be lightly placed on the body to transfer source energy to any areas of stagnancy or trauma. Because Reiki is advanced and always respects free will, it can only be effectively transferred with your full consent. Following the session, we conclude with a discussion about shared experiences and begin to review after care treatment suggestions.
